Dementia Care PDF Print E-mail

While Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, accounting for approximately 64% of all cases, there are other forms too, and all are just as devastating. The more common secondary dementias are as follows.

Vascular Dementia

This type of dementia is the second most common, occurring in approximately 20% of all cases. Its most common cause is a stroke, where blood flow to a part of the brain is blocked and brain cells in that area are damaged.

Lewy Body Dementia

This type accounts for between 5 - 15% of dementia cases. It is characterized by abnormal protein deposits in the brain's nerve cells, most commonly in areas of the brain associated with thinking and movement.

Frontotemporal Dementia

Frontotemporal dementia refers to a group of disorders that affect parts of the brain associated with personality and behaviour. This group accounts for approximately 2 - 5% of all dementias.

By keeping a person with any form of dementia engaged and stimulated physically, cognitively and socially, it is possible to slow down the effects of the dementia and to manage difficult behaviours. This is why day programs offered by the Alzheimer’s Society and other organizations are so helpful. But not everyone can or wants to attend these group programs.

Jackson Therapeutic Recreation is essentially a day program that comes to your home. Our qualified and professional recreation therapists visit in your home to provide 1:1 activity programs that help manage the disease and protect the person’s physical, cognitive and social abilities.
