Frequently Asked Questions PDF Print E-mail

Q. Who should use Therapeutic Recreation?

People with barriers to productive and fulfilling lives, for example: stroke, dementia, bereavement, social isolation, depression, anxiety, physical disability, or behavioural issues, to name a few. Phrased differently, anyone who could be getting a bit more out of life but needs help to find out how and ongoing support to do it.

Q. What is the educational background of the people that will work with my family member?

All of our staff have either a university degree or college diploma unique to the profession of Therapeutic Recreation. In Ontario, The University of Waterloo, Brock University in St. Catharines, and Ottawa University offer degree programs. College level diploma programs are offered at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Niagara College in St. Catharines, Georgian College in Orillia, George Brown College in Toronto and others. These are the only people we hire.

Q. Do you carry insurance?

Absolutely. We carry Corporate General Liability and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) coverage.

Q. Is there an organization that governs Therapeutic Recreation?

In Ontario the profession is guided by our professional association called Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO), www.trontario.org. Therapeutic Recreation professionals in the province abide by the Standards of Practice as set out by TRO. The profession is also represented nationally by the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association (CTRA), www.canadian-tr.org.

Q. What will you do with my family member during your sessions?

This is a very common question when people first contact us, and the answer depends on your family member. What we end up doing with them depends entirely on their unique strengths, interests and goals. Our first step in determining the content of our sessions will be to get to know your family member through our assessment process. This content will evolve over time through ongoing communication with you.

Q. How do I know what happened in each session?

One of the great features of our service is that we provide detailed, written reports for every session we deliver. These reports are sent to you at the end of the month along with the invoice for that month. You can receive your reports by regular mail or email. If your family member lives in a care facility, with your permission we send copies of the reports to the staff there as well so everyone involved with the care of your family member has visibility into our work and can benefit from the results.
