How do we do it
Every therapeutic program that we design for our clients is tailored to suit their unique strengths and interests, and to meet their individual goals. Our staff employ a huge variety of techniques and resources, from physical activity to music, in order to design successful programs that improve quality of living. Here are some examples:
- Discovery and development of new interests and hobbies through discussion, skill building and experimentation.
- Using music to calm anxious behaviours and reduce stress; also used for reminiscence programs
- Physical activity to help prevent falls and improve health, including walking, stretching, grip strength exercises and seated aerobics.
- Social involvement either through visits by the therapist or through encouraging social interactions and building friendships.
- Mental stimulation using memory retention exercises and brain aerobics
- Community involvement or re-integration by researching interesting community resources and practicing how to use these resources independently.
A holistic approach to health focuses on health promotion and disease prevention. Being meaningfully engaged physically, socially, spiritually, and psychologically is a vital part of this focus. People with disabilities and other barriers or challenges may need support to achieve and maximize this engagement and fulfillment.
This is where Therapeutic Recreation (TR) steps in to optimize health within a person’s abilities and potential using tools and therapeutic programs derived from recreation and leisure activities.
Therapeutic Recreation, also referred to as Recreation Therapy, is a health profession that serves people of any age in a wide variety of settings, such as hospitals, long term care facilities, drug rehabilitation centres, and in the home. The people who work in this field all have college or university education specific to the profession.
Our president, Matt Jackson, and many of our staff are members in good standing of the provincial association, Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO), the professional association which guides the practice in Ontario. The profession is represented nationally by the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association (CTRA).
Assessments and Reporting
Every new client relationship begins by going through the assessment process. This process allows us to get to know the client and their strengths, interests and goals. Background information is taken from interviews with family members and any other health professional involved with their care. Through interviews and conversations with the client we learn about their physical and mental health, what barriers exist for them, their previous life activities and interests, and enlist their input for setting goals.
The assessment provides the foundation for the work that will be done with the client, and provides the road map for both the therapist and the client to chart their successes and achievement of the goals.
Proper documentation is central to our success and accountability. The Progress Notes the therapist makes after each session are sent to the client or the family each month and, with permission to the facility where the client resides, if applicable.
These reports are stored in electronic format, meaning that they form an Electronic Health Record (EHR). They can be easily shared with other health professionals involved with a person’s care with the appropriate permissions.
